Material Composition
The most fundamental difference between TPO and PVC is what they are made of.
TPO, or Thermoplastic Polyolefin, is a blend of polypropylene and ethylene-propylene rubber. Early TPO varied by manufacturer, but the industry has largely standardized and today’s products perform consistently across the major brands..
PVC, or Polyvinyl Chloride, is made from vinyl chloride polymers and typically includes plasticizers that give the membrane its flexibility. PVC has been commercially produced to a more standardized formula for longer than TPO, which is part of why its long-term performance data is more extensive.
Chemical and Grease Resistance
PVC has significantly stronger resistance to chemicals, oils, grease, and animal fats than TPO. When these substances come into contact with a roof surface, through exhaust vents, rooftop equipment, or industrial processes, PVC holds up where TPO may degrade over time.
